In the month of September, I was elated to find out that I finished most of my anticipated reads of the year.
In total I read 17 books this month.
Books I decided to DNF:
Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff.
I absolutely loved the first two chapters. I was on the look-out for the perfect family saga and those chapters were exactly it.
The characterization was handled so damn well. Everyone was fully developed and the way the family history was told really reminded me of one of my favorite films: Boyhood.
Boyhood is one of the most ground-breaking coming-of-age tales, and for those exact reasons I also loved the start of this book.
But then the narrative switches to focus more on the main character – Lotto – without being with his family, which really irked me.
I was more invested in Lotto’s mother and childhood than his pretentious college years and everything that followed with Mathilde. So I had to unfortunately DNF this book for the time-being.
Books I haven’t stopped thinking about:
Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo.
The epicness that ensued in this sequel went beyond my wildest dreams. It both filled and destroyed my heart, which, what more can you ask from Leigh Bardugo?
It’s just such a quality continuation. And I’m seriously in love with all the misfits (Inej Ghafa and Kaz Brekker especially)!!
Honorable Mention:
I finally sat down to watch the film adaption to one of my favorite graphic novels: Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi.
I usually don’t end up watching films in one sitting unless I really and truly enjoy them. And it this case, I couldn’t pause Persepolis even to get some water.
It was such a thrilling feeling to go back to Marjane’s story, and I was so into the story that I forgot that I was watching Marjane’s story unfold and not actually living it.
Also, one of my favorite scenes was the “Eye of the Tiger” scene:
It was one of the most genuine (the singing!!) and vivid scenes I’ve had the pleasure to both watch and read.
And another thing: revisiting her beloved uncle, Anoosh, and that heartbreaking ending completely lanced my heart.
Persepolis is a complete game-changer.
